Mate, we made it!

Yes - we're here. Let me try to describe the past 36 hours in some sort of order.

We left for the Denver airport at 5:00pm, Denver time. They checked our bags in Denver and to our surprise, said we'd be able to check them all the way to Brisbane (with a short trip through customs in Sydney). Just to alleviate your fears, our bags arrived just as promised --- nothing to worry about. The flight from LA to Sydney left at 10:30 Thursday evening and we arrived in Sydney 141/2 hours later. The flight itself was looooooooooonnnnnnggggg, but we slept more than we thought we could (which was about 5 hours each). Just for the record, Quantas Airlines does a fabulous job making the flight the most enjoyable possible. Everyone could choose from their own movie packages or listen to music. Plus two meals and lots of pillows and blankets to sleep with. My personal favorite was the Map and Clock on the TV --- Showing you exactly where in the middle of the Pacific Ocean you're currently located (in case of that emergency water landing - which I actually took seriously this time!) and telling you down to the minute how much time you have remaining until your arrival on the ground. It's quite a daunting thought to have finished a 2 hour movie and a meal only to realize you still have 11 hours left on your trip.

But - we made it! Luggage and all! After touching down in Sydney and going through customs, we headed off to our connecting flight to Brisbane (another 1 1/2 hours). There, Adam (the groom) greeted us and took us to our hotel.

That gave way to driving on the "wrong" side of the road and riding in a car with the steering wheel being located on the "right" side of the vehicle. Jimmy will be driving a friend's car back and forth and while we're not so concerned about driving on the interstate ('cause you just stay in the same lane everyone else is in), it could take a great deal of concentration not to make a right hand turn on a red light! (Because traffic moves from right to left, not left to right). I don't think we'll have any conversations while we're driving - it's so easy to get turned around and go the wrong way!

After a quick shower, we went with friends to eat --- and of all places --- we went to KFC! Simple chicken dinners gave us a kick to keep going all afternoon. We're quite tired right now - but refusing to take a nap and give into the jet lag that's plaguing us. I'm typing this post from the groom's parent's house - who have graciously opened up their home for a barbeque for all "guests from overseas" for the evening. It's so good to see old friends (FYI - this family was one of 3 families who moved to the states from australia 7 years ago, then moved back to australia 3 years ago). I'm amazed at how much their 4 boys have grown and yet their hospitality remains incredible.

Australia itself feels much like southern california to me - lots of palm trees, tropical plants and flowers, heat and humidity and sun and fun. I don't mind the heat a bit - I guess the whole part about me being in a tropical location while on vacation just makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable. In fact, driving in the car, with the windows down, my sunglasses on, wind blowing through my hair, makes me feel like a true vacationer.

I'm sorry this post isn't quite so witty - I am quite tired and my contacts are not cooperating. But it's a good thing I got the tan... this place is crawling with bronzed, blonde bodies!

Tomorrow is "sleeping in" day - and rehearsal for the wedding. The plane didn't have an outlet for Jimmy's computer (only in business class - darn!) so we weren't able to post anything on the flight itself... but hopefully we can do a day-by-day update for you from now on. It's the least you deserve for reading all of Carrie's Comments - without the confetti.

G'Day Mate!

Today's Travel Day

Are you kidding me? I can't believe it's time to leave tonight. We had a long day yesterday and I didn't get the chance to post anything (sorry!) --- i worked 'till mid afternoon, then of course had to get my hair done, then home to feed Bishop his final evening meal at home (he goes to the kennel this afternoon) and off to the tanning salon to get a "mystic tan". Let me just say - I've been through tanning. You can't be pastey white and walk around stage in a swimsuit with a bunch of judges looking at you... so I know tanning. And if any of you have ever recieved the "mystic sunless tan" before where they spray you front and back - you know what I know. It's a darn fine tan. I'm afraid people are going to think i have skin cancer - it's that good of a tan. Problem is, it only holds for about a week which means I have to get a bit of "real color" by the middle of next week. We've got 4 bottles of sunscreen with us - I'm not planning on burning!

OK - so enough about the tan. I haven't begun to pack! We wanted to start last night, but other things came up instead. I've only "seperated" a bunch of stuff into different bags... this is the jewelry bag, this is the makeup bag, this is the shampoo-toothpaste-and-other-hygenic-items bag, etc. And people think I'm not organized!

And then there's the shoe problem... I'm not sure how I'm going to handle that. We're gone for two weeks and we're attending a formal wedding. Plus the beach, plus doing "tourist" stuff in Sydney, plus a lot of walking, plus evenings out. I can hear my father's voice in the back of my head saying "pack sensible shoes". The reason I know that's my father's voice is because I can clearly hear my mother's voice saying "Yes! You definitely need to bring three pairs of strappy black sandles!". I can tell, this will be the difficult part - deciding which voice to listen to.

Otherwise, I'm working this morning so that we can finish packing this afternoon and get to the airport this evening... preparing for the longest 16 hours of my life. Supposedly these flights aren't "so bad" anymore - apparently everyone has their own tv screen in front of them and you can choose from multiple movies, etc. I don't seem to be as concerned about the entertainment factor as I am concerned about the "how in the world am I gonna fall asleep" factor - and even the "I've got to get up and jump up and down to get my muscles moving" factor. Oh, the difficulty some people have with international travel! What a whiner am I!

Ok - so - the next time you hear from me -I'll either be on the ground or in the air (Jimmy's bringing his laptop computer). We'll know the answers to the questions posed above... did Carrie and Jimmy cry after leaving Bishop at the kennel? Did someone in LA mistake her for Jessica Simpson with her long blonde hair and killer tan? And which "shoe voice" did she listen to when packing? These questions and more... will be answered... when you come back to www.carriescomments.blogspot.com for more of Carrie's Comments... without the confetti.

So much to do!

There's so much to do to get ready for a big trip --- and the days keep going by faster and faster.

We've got several lists together now... for example... there's the "Things to purchase at Target" list that includes toothpaste, books, eye drops and perscriptions. Then there's the "Things to take care of before we leave" list like rent checks, dog food and getting a tan so we don't get kicked off the beach for being so incredibly pastey white. And then of course, the "Things we've already purchased and should not leave behind" list like sunscreen, neck pillows, disposable cameras and decks of cards. Finally, I'm looking for an herbal remedy called "no jet lag" that popped up on several websites as a good way to help people to recover from jet lag. Hopefully one of these crazy vitamin places here in Boulder will have it :)

Our goal is to start packing tonight - to get a head start on the whole trip. We'll see if that actually happens or not. Our second goal is to eat as much food in the refrigerator as possible - which normally, isn't a big problem. As many of you know, our kitchen is mostly decorative... but with Christmas parties and familiy in town over the past 2 weeks, we seem to have much more food than usual. Someone asked me today if we were going to make sure we didn't come home to a carton of spoiled milk in the fridge. I told her I wasn't so sure we didn't already have a carton of spoiled milk in the fridge! Truth Hurts.

Anyway - Here's our itinerary for the time we're gone:

Leave LA Thursday evening (the 30th) --- arrive 2 days later in Brisbane
01Jan - Travelodge/Mt.Gravatt (Brisbane, QLD)
02Jan - Travelodge/Mt.Gravatt (Brisbane, QLD)
03Jan - Travelodge/Mt.Gravatt (Brisbane, QLD)
04Jan - Hyatt/Coolum Beach (Sunshine Coast, QLD)
05Jan - Hyatt/Coolum Beach (Sunshine Coast, QLD)
06Jan - Hyatt/Coolum Beach (Sunshine Coast, QLD)
07Jan - Crowne Plaza/Sydney (Sydney, NSW)
08Jan - Crowne Plaze/Sydney (Sydney, NSW
09Jan - Marriott/Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast, QLD)
10Jan - Marriott/Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast, QLD)
11Jan - Marriott/Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast, QLD)
Leave Brisbane Wednesday noon (the 12th) arrive in LA at 10:00am on the 12th - crazy!

That's the latest... We'll let you know how the packing's coming! Remember - you can check back here at www.carriescomments.blogspot.com for all the details - without the confetti! :)

Getting Ready for Down Under

As the Lakey's are preparing for our 2 week trip to Australia, I've had so many people say "how nice it would be" if we could send them an itinerary... or a day by day update of what's going on in our lives. Well, I'm not so sure about the 'day by day' part, but in an effort to maintain accurate communication across 16 time zones, I thought I'd put together a blog!

This lovely piece of the internet will allow you to stop by whenever you wish and get the lastest on what we've been up to. All you have to do is check out www.carriescomments.blogspot.com. We'll do our best to update it on a regular basis and let you know how we're doing.

For those of you die-hard fans, just remember the time change is 16 hours plus one day --- so if it's noon in Denver, it's 6am tomorrow morning in Australia. Good thought to remember.

Hope this is fun! Check back to see how our "pre-trip preparation" is coming - Just FYI - We fly out of LA Thursday evening.

Enjoy!
